Dear Filly: “How do I get better at…”

Dear Filly,

How do I get better at communicating more effectively?

Sincerely,

Communicating Cassie

Dear Cassie,

One of the best ways to communicate more effectively is to practice active listening. Always pay attention to the speech without interrupting. That way, when they finish speaking, you can ask any questions to acknowledge what they have said and show you were listening!

Another way to be a successful communicator is to be clear in what you say. Especially when you’re speaking to someone you aren’t super comfortable speaking with, avoid jargon and complex language to guarantee they understand the message you are trying to put across.

In addition, nonverbal language is just as important as your verbal language! Your body language, tone of voice, and facial expressions can convey even more than words. I like to occasionally nod while the other person is talking, so they know I am listening.

Also, ask your friends for feedback! I am a horse and cannot talk, nor have I heard you speak. Ask your friends you speak with often if there is any way you can communicate more effectively, and they may have some helpful feedback for you!

Sincerely,

Filly

Dear Filly,

If you could time travel, where would you go to?

Sincerely,

Traveling Telly

Dear Telly,

If I could time travel, I would go to the wild west! That way, I can just ride around with a cowboy without a worry in the world. I wouldn’t have to worry about my classwork, riding at the rodeo, or competing in the Olympics.

Fun fact: I was in the Brazil Olympics! I flew on the Air Horse One Plane with some nice Stallions, but I did not make the cut to compete. If you ask me, it was rigged, but that’s a story for another time.

I think I would also go back to the Stone Ages when people rode horses in war. Imagine this: someone is going to battle with me, and I have some really cool armor on. That hits different!

Sincerely,

Filly
