Indoor gardening has become an essential component of house etiquette. For ages, plants have been utilized to brighten workplaces, lofts, houses, and business environments.

To keep your plants alive in a dorm room or apartment, you should establish a reasonable climate for the plants to survive. All plants need legitimate light openness, space to develop, customary watering, supplements, and time.

To provide a proper environment for your plants, you need to evaluate the light sources you have available and keep the plants in direct sunlight for six hours a day. While this may seem impossible, simply keeping plants on a windowsill will do. However, if you have a patio space or balcony available to you, this would be the preferred method of choice.

Once you have analyzed your light sources, you can shop for plants that will oblige your lighting circumstance. When keeping plants indoors, a species that inclines toward fractional shade or full shade will have the best rate of survival.

An illustration of this would be traditional house plants such as Tropicals which can excel in heat but not always in full sunlight. On the other hand, traditional vegetables need full sunlight but do not always need warm temperatures.

If you wish to grow vegetables, placing plants on a balcony is the preferred method. When growing plants on a balcony or patio surface, be sure to water frequently, as wind and harsh weather can make plants dry out fast.

While vegetable plants and herbs favor full sunlight, it is still possible for them to grow inside an apartment or dorm space. More and more people have started to grow their own vegetables for sustainability reasons.

All you need to grow your own vegetables is nutritious soil, frequent watering, seeds, and tender loving care. To maintain healthy plants in a dorm or apartment setting as a college student, low maintenance plants are ideal because they require little care to thrive.

When preparing for your first plant, you need the proper tools. Purchasing a Terracotta pot is beneficial for its reasonable pricing and versatility.

To ensure your plant doesn’t become root-bound, you need to regularly check the lower part of the pot. If you see roots coming out of the base of the pot, your plant is flourishing and needs more space to develop, meaning you will need a larger pot to transfer the plant to.

When growing vegetables, a fertilized soil mixture is preferred, but for low maintenance plants, potting soil is just fine.

Some low maintenance plants that are suitable for the indoors are Snake plants, Aloe Vera, Cacti, Succulents, Peace Lilies, String of Hearts, Kenita Palm, Devil’s Ivy, Jade, ZZ Plants, Chinese Evergreen, and many more. These plants should only be watered when the top two inches of soil are dry. They also thrive from neglection, making them easy to take care of. Any plant that requires dim lighting will be sustainable indoors.

As a college student, having these plants as home decor will surely bring some positivity to your living space and create a tranquil home.
