Edit: The original title, “Student Elected Youngest Mayor in U.S.,” has been changed to, “Student Elected Youngest Female Mayor in U.S.” for clarity.

ABAC student Brooke Huckaby was elected mayor of Arabi, GA, on Nov. 7, making her the youngest mayor in the US.

Though Huckaby hasn’t been mayor for a long, she is already in the process of building new roads, solving conflicts within the community, and giving land to the company Southern Fireworks to improve the FiberOptics in Arabi.

Huckaby is also picking up where her father, former mayor Craig Huckaby, left off by getting a police department in Arabi.

She has several other ambitions for her town, but as Huckaby said, “Everything is a process.”

Recently, the Arabi city council voted on a new police department, and they are currently looking for a new police chief.

Huckaby’s father said, “When Brooke came in there, she made some connections and had some people to come talk to the council, then they were persuaded to move forward with it.”

One piece of advice her father gave her is to “Be cautious and hear out both sides.”

Vernon Jones, former member of the Georgia House of Representatives, met Huckaby at a ribbon cutting ceremony for a new business that opened in Arabi.

Vernon said, “It was an inspiration to see someone that young as mayor… to take up that mantle of leadership and be able to inspire others not only to lead the older generation, but to inspire the next generation.”

In terms of connecting with the people of Arabi, Huckaby said, “I don’t want anybody to think that I’m better than them…. I want to approach them like I’m a normal person.”

Huckaby has a lot on her plate, being an ABAC student and the mayor of Arabi. With less time with friends, her life changed “drastically.” Emma Lacey, ABAC student and friend of Huckaby’s, said, “Me and Brooke were together every single day…. but we found room to hang out.”

Lacey said, “She knows I’m proud of her… sometimes we try to hang out in Cordele instead of hanging out in Tifton.”

Mr. Huckaby knows that the role of mayor can be very time consuming: “I kind of had my plate full and I wasn’t having the time to do what I wanted to do… I made the decision within the last four-year term that I wanted to give it up.” Now, his daughter has decided to step in and take action.

Mr. Huckaby said, “I was proud of her I glad she did.”

Brooke Huckaby is heavily involved in the city of Arabi and looks forward to serving as mayor and as a person that the community can talk to. During Huckaby’s four-year term, more changes are to come to improve the city of Arabi and its community. Huckaby has said that she wants to run for governor one day, and she plans to push forward and work hard to get there.
