Dear Filly: “How do you..”

Dear Filly,

How do you beat end-of-the-semester stress?

Sincerely, Tweaking Tanner

Dear Tanner,

Here’s the trick: you don’t! The end of the semester is an inherently stressful time for everyone, and there’s no way to make it through without stressing at least a little bit. People (and horses) forget that being afraid or nervous is a natural feeling everyone has. Just because it causes discomfort doesn’t mean it’s bad! In a way, fear and stress is our brain’s way of looking out for us and letting us know about what is happening around us, even if it can be overactive sometimes.

My advice is to remember that you’ll never be 100% stress free, so don’t try to avoid or eliminate it. Instead, learn to live with and minimize it, be that through spending more time studying, taking a break to spend some time relaxing with friends, or talking with your advisor (Filly has a great one!). Filly naturally lives a life that’s free from academic stress, because why would a horse take upper level classes? C’mon now, I know you’re brain isn’t that fried!

 Sincerely, Filly

Dear Filly,

What did you do for the Halloweekend?

Sincerely, Tricky Thomas

Dear Thomas,

I spent it enjoying all sorts of fun activities because I don’t get afraid, I make others fear me! Trick-or-treating is always a disaster; I’m a horse, so they always think it’s okay not to give me candy, except for that one lady who thought I was a human in a REALLY good horse costume… not sure what that says about me, but thanks for the treat??? I wore my very cute witch costume and chased after some kids pretending to cast spells on them. Tift County, you were a dream!

I also hung out at my stable and watched scary movies with friends and family! “Scary” is a loose term of course, as I am a horse and can outrun basically anything. However, I did have a very hard time sleeping after we read the story of the Horseless Head-man. He was apparently a man with a very big head, and he lost his horse. He now hunts horses that he thinks are his, and he headbutts them, and then… okay, can we change the subject…I need to sleep…

Sincerely, Filly
