Every Tuesday, people ranging from aspiring dancers to health conscious (and gym wary) students meet at Dancers’ Pointe for their adult gym lessons.

While the award-winning dance academy holds dance lessons for all ages, their adult-focused class has resumed in time for the fall semester. Teaching a variety of styles ranging from pointe ballet to acrobatics to hip-hop, prospective students can learn a variety of techniques and styles regardless of their skill level or music taste.

While many people view dance as something relegated to the backgrounds of music videos or for theaters, dancing has become a popular way to maintain a healthy lifestyle for millions of Americans.

Most     of all, dancing allows attendees to pursue this lifestyle while having fun.

When starting their fitness journey, one of the most common pieces of advice people receive is “focus on workouts you actually enjoy.” For the students at Dancers’ Pointe, dancing is a perfect way to exercise while also having a great time.

The other main piece of advice new gym-goers hear is that consistency is key—if you don’t stay consistent, your gains will slowly disappear. However, going to the gym isn’t always realistic for many adults, be it from their schedule or lack of athletic ability.

In addition, loud machinery and experienced gym-goers can lead to the gym being an intimidating and uncomfortable environment, leaving it harder for those new to fitness to stay consistent.

However, at Dancers’ Pointe, the instructor, Lazar Womble, creates an accepting and beginner-friendly atmosphere, where he goes over each move step by step, allowing each student to learn at their own pace.

This welcoming and more personal environment not only allows students to feel more comfortable, but it also allows them to ask questions and grow at a speed that is right for them—all while remaining consistent with weekly lessons!

Since the students come from a variety of skill levels, the first class I attended began with very basic steps to ensure everyone started from the same jumping-off point. With each week, Womble increased the difficulty level of the class at a pace that challenged us but remained easy for beginners to follow.

Students range from K-Pop fans who admire and want to learn from the unique fusion of styles showcased in the genre, to those interested in learning the more classical styles of the performing arts.

Also common are parents, who often first came to Dancers’ Pointe to support their children, but who are now interested in the academy’s approach to fitness.

While Dancers’ Pointe remains a go-to location for dancers looking to sharpen their skills with award winning instructors, casual music fans and hesitant gym-goers should look into their classes as an alternative to the traditional methods of exercise.

Dancing may not be the first thing you think of when you think of exercise, but it can be a fun and exciting way to get moving without being in a gym environment.

From numerous styles to a welcoming atmosphere, Dancers’ Pointe offers a fun alternative to fitness that is open to anyone.
