The Grammys held their 64th annual Grammy Awards, and there was a lot of drama on the red carpet. From the clothing choices (or lack thereof) of Kanye West’s wife Bianca Censori, to Chappell Roan accepting the Best New Artist award and calling out the music industry’s predatory treatment of new and upcoming artists, this year’s Grammys ceremony featured a lot of debate over who deserved what awards.
Record of the Year
The record of the year was given to “Not Like Us” by Kendrick Lemar. While it was among the most popular songs nominated in the category, I think that “Bird of a Feather” By Billie Eilish. The meaning behind “Birds of a Feather” is that you want to love and be with someone until they are no longer with you because you are talking about the person you spend the rest of your life with, forever and always. The song has a beautiful and special meaning. Critics have praised the song for its emotional lyrics, catchy melody, and pop quality.
Album of the Year
Album of the Year Caused lots of controversies, Beyonce won the category for her album “Cowboy Carter”. While critics say that the album has a country feel but not really at the same time. Charli XCX’s “Brat” should have won Album of the Year. The album released on June 7, 2024, is an album that is made for everyone. The songs on the album can make you want to dance, and some others can make you want to think about your life. Overall, just a versatile album itself. Not to mention the album was involved in the 2024 presidential campaign. Many people refer to Kamala Harris as “Brat” The term “Brat” can mean that someone is unapologetically themselves and someone overall just confident.
Best Pop Duo/ Group Performance
“Die with a Smile” By Lady Gaga & Bruno Mars won Best Pop Duo/ Group Performance, the song is too overplayed and makes me want to rip my ears out every time I listen to it. So instead, I would give the Grammy award to anyone else who is not Lady Gaga or Bruno Mars. I would’ve awarded Taylor Swift and Gracie Abrams the award for their song “us.”
Best Country Album
Best Country Album was stolen because Beyonce won the category with “Cowboy Carter”. I feel like it should have been Chris Stapleton for his album “Higher”. “White Horse” was one of the most popular songs on the album. Critics describe the album as “a solid country album, with tasteful songwriting and a range of emotion” according to The Musical Divide. My favorite song off the album is “I Think I’m In Love with You”.
Best Alternative Music Album
The Best Alternative Music Album award was given to St. Vincent for his album “All Born Screaming.” I think that the award should’ve been given to Clairo for her album “Charm”. “Juna” and “Sexy to Someone” are the most popular songs on the album. The album has and light, breezy feel to it, overall, just a beautiful and calm album.
Best Score for Visual Media (Includes Film and Television)
“Dune: Part Two” by Hans Zimmer won Best Score for Visual Media (Includes Film and Television). While the soundtrack for “Dune: Part Two” was incredibly good itself. I feel like the soundtrack for “Challengers” should have won the Grammy because of only one scene at the end of the movie, where they were at the final round of the Challenger event. It was where all the secrets were revealed, and they were in the last section of the game. The camera was laser-focused on the tennis ball, you feel tension when watching the final scene of the movie.
Best R&B Performance
Muni Long won Best R&B Performance for her song “Made for Me (Live On BET)” while the music is upbeat and catchy. People think “Saturn” by SZA should have won this award because of the meaning behind the song. The meaning behind Saturn is wanting a better life for yourself and wanting to transport yourself to another planet and overall, just escapism.
Best Pop Vocal Album
Sabrina Carpenter won the Best Pop Vocal Album for her album “Short n’ Sweet” Overall I love the album, and it is good. The award should have gone to Chappell Roan for her album “The Rise and The Fall Of A Midwest Princess”. The album had many hits my personal favorites on the album are “Feminominom”, “Red Wine Supernova”, “Casual”, “HOT TO GO”, and lastly “Pink Pony Club”. Out of the list of songs that I mentioned the one I relate to the most is “Causal.” “Casual” is a song about a person who isn’t on the same page as the person in an untitled relationship.
Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical
Speaking of Sabrina Carpenter, I feel like Sabrina Carpenter should have won Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical. The album was a success culturally and commercially. My Favorite Songs on the album are “Please, Please, please”, “Sharpest Tool”, “Bed Chem”, “Espresso” and “Juno”.
