Oscar Martinez, an agricultural education major at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (ABAC), is the recipient of the Maria Guadalupe Cervantes scholarship. The scholarship is awarded to students who are Georgia residents of Hispanic/Latino descent who may not qualify for state or federal aid.

“I feel incredibly honored and grateful to have been selected for this scholarship,” Martinez said. “I believe that this recognition not only validates my hard work and dedication, but also provides me with the financial support that I need to continue pursuing my education and career goals.”

The scholarship was established in honor of Maria Guadalupe, an educator from Mexico. As a tribute to her contributions to education, La Fiesta de Pueblo awards this scholarship to an ABAC student who embodies her exemplary qualities.

Martinez is involved in several on-campus activities, including Cultura Latinx Club (CLC), Collegiate Future Farmers of America (CFFA), and Education Club. He also serves as the member outreach officer for Minorities in Agriculture and Natural Resources (MANRRS).

In addition to his campus involvement, Martinez also stays engaged in community organizations such as the Upward Bound program, College Assistance Migrant Program, Emory Farmworker Project, and as a volunteer firefighter for his county.

Martinez expects to use the scholarship to further his education and maintain his student leadership and involvement at ABAC. After graduation, he plans to become an agriculture teacher before pursuing a career in politics.
