“Street Choir: A Van Morrison Experience” brought the passion of music to ABAC’s Howard Auditorium on Feb. 1, presented and made possible by Mr. Kyle Basko.

Mr. Basko contributes to the Fine Arts Department as the program coordinator. The performance was showcased as one of the events for the Arts & Culture tribute series by ABAC’s Fine Arts Department.

Street Choir is a tribute band made up of seven musicians led by Greg Hester as their lead singer. The band began making music and creating their sound in 2016 in Atlanta, Georgia, primarily on social media. From that point forward, “Street Choir: A Van Morrison Experience” has toured the state of Georgia, making a name for themselves.

Not only did the event bring excitement to the fans of the Irish icon, Van Morrison, in the community, but also to those of the student body who had never been exposed to his work.

The set list included hits like “Domino,” “Brown Eyed Girl,” “Moondance,” “Tupelo Honey,” “Into the Mystic,” “Wild Night,” “Have I Told you Lately,” and a variety of other classics.

This performance was a great way for students to learn about the musical genres of rock and roll, soul, and rhythm and blues.

The crowd members varied in different ages and backgrounds. Be that as it may, they were all communicating their excitement through dancing, cheering, applauding, and belting out the melodies as the band played.

The lead artist, Greg Hester, performed an uncanny rendition of Van Morrison. Greg portrayed this image astoundingly by his choice of musical selection, stage presence, and his choice of attire for the performance.

Greg painted “Van the Man” (the name given to Van Morrison by his fans) to the audience in a brilliant manner, engaging the crowd with the music being created on the stage.

Most of the younger audience members discovered that Van Morrison was responsible for the classic stand tune “Brown Eyed Girl.”

The band was exceptionally receptive to the crowd’s energy, and the bass player for the band performed a stunt no one was prepared for: He removed his shoe and began playing his instrument with his foot. The crowd members were dumbfounded by this stunt, as it is not a common trick to come across.

The event was a highly engaging occasion for the local area. Many of the music educators at ABAC were pleased by the educational performance, and the Fine Arts Department is continuing the Arts and Culture series with “Boys in the Band: The Alabama Tribute.”

“Street Choir: A Van Morrison Experience” was a delightful performance that had community members grinning as they exited the auditorium.

“Boys in the Band: The Alabama Tribute” will be held on Apr. 11 at 7 p.m. in Howard Auditorium.
