ABAC student Laura Wiley hosted two open mic nights on the third floor of the Carlton Center inside of Studio 3.

Multiple performers showcased their talents at the Open Mic that night, such as Annabeth Gay, who sang “Dreams” by Fleetwood Mac; Michiah Maddox, who gave a powerful cover of “I’m Here”; Turner Conger, who sang “All of Me” by John Legend; and a plethora of other talented individuals from outside of the ABAC community.

Some individuals showcased their own original songs at the Open Mic, including Laura Wiley and Aubrey Kinard. Miguel Escobar, on a different note, presented his artistry and aspirations. Some students took a more educational route; Ashley Brannen spoke about agricultural education, and Gabriella Hernandez spoke about her experiences and provided an overview of pet overpopulation.

There were no limitations when it came to how many musical instruments performers could play. ABAC professor Joshua Lavender was a “one man band,” playing the guitar and harmonica at the same time as he sang.

“I just picked a harmonica up and started blowing in it,” Lavender said. He also played a selection on the keyboard.

Later, saxophone player James Landis and Haggins solo  friend accompanied by Haggins on a cajon, performing a rendition of the song “Havana” by Camila Cabello.

Wiley said, “A lot of people, especially in a small town, do have musical talents—they just don’t have an outlet to share it”

Tift County High School student Emily Rowe said, “You could come and sing or perform anything you want and not be judged.” Rowe gave an entertaining performance of the song “Stars and the Moon” by Jason Robert Brown.

Music can also be described as “free therapy.” Turner Conger gave an emotional performance for the loss of his dog and other tough situations in his life.

As of now, the next Open Mic night is not scheduled, but be sure to keep your eyes open for future announcements so you can join Laura Wiley and others as they bring music to the ears of ABAC.
