Stress for college students can be manageable in affordable, low maintenance, and personal ways that may be started whenever they are needed. Trying to find a balance throughout all your classes and later going home with nothing but schoolwork and headaches can take a toll on a college student.

Here are some ways that can help college students handle stress with just a few useful tips.

Try walking outside when you are feeling stressed. Walking outside can help students clear their minds and reduce stress. Whether it’s over exams, projects, or even having a hard time balancing school and work at the same time, walking for 30 minutes or an hour a day can benefit your mood.

Keeping a planner or updating your digital calendar regularly does not only help college students be more prepared coming into class, but it also keeps you updated on what has to get done first. Keeping a calendar or planner can let those around you including friends, family, and co-workers know what your priorities are so that you can be well organized throughout your day.

Listening to just the instrumental sounds while completing an essay or finishing up some math work can help students concentrate more on their assignments. Sometimes the mind needs to be relaxed because of the amount of homework a college student has. Finding a soothing song can help manage stressful thoughts and overthinking.

If you’re still feeling stressed, try out other options; one option may not be enough. Finding a good place to study can also motivate healthy study habits. Going to your local coffee shop or finding a bench on campus with a beautiful view can help students feel more relaxed while studying.

Try going to your town’s local bakery to release the stress of your schoolwork while enjoying a sweet treat. Don’t go crazy with the sugars, but sometimes it is good to treat yourself. What better way to do that than with a nice banana nut muffin?

Stress can be handled by simply having someone to talk to. Try speaking to a friend or a family member about your issues. You can also reach out to your school’s counseling center who are always there to help you manage stress (ABAC’s Counseling Center is located at Branch Hall room 201, or you can visit abac.edu/counseling-center).

No matter what you are going through, you are not alone. There are several options available to you; by applying these helpful tips into your everyday life, you can begin to effectively manage your stress and find relief.
