ABAC student Laura Wiley, organizer and host of the Golden Light Open Mic at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (ABAC), planned a second Golden Night Open Mic at Lakeside Lobby, on March 29 from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm.
This wasn’t the first Golden Light Open Mic that Laura has held. Two previous events were held off campus at a place not far from the campus called Your Pie, which was the first place Laura held the Golden Light Open Mic. The first Golden Light Open Mic here on campus was inside the Carlton Center on February 16, 2023. In 2023, Laura decided to bring the Open Mic to campus, because there weren’t a lot of outlets for other to players here at ABAC to perform new material on an open platform.
Having the second Golden Mic Open Light at Lakeside was a way of reaching more students. She said, “The goal of doing it at Lakeside was to expand the place we did on campus to reach more students, instead of having students come to us we went to Lakeside.” Laura decided to bring the Open Mic to campus because there weren’t a lot of outlets for others to play here at ABAC to perform new material on an open platform. With support from ABAC and Studio 3, Laura and others can use the equipment necessary to make the Golden Mic possible here at ABAC.
ABAC student Delci Vega had her first time attending the Golden Light Open Mic at ABAC, saying “I think it definitely made it more causal than when we have it in the studio. It also gave an opportunity for students who are walking by to just be able to like to stop for a few minutes, and kind of like chill and see whoever’s performing”. The Golden Light Open Mic is an event that allows students to showcase their talents and ideas in their unique way. Also, it can bring a connection between ABAC and the community.
