Rebecca Cofer, the former Coordinator of Campus Tutoring Services and Coordinator of the Academic Achievement Center (AAC), has taken the position of Programs Manager of the Learning Center at Georgia College. Cofer began working at ABAC in Aug. of 2009 and was hired as a Mentor/Student Development Specialist in Enrollment Management.
“In what I think was 2011, Nicholas Urquhart and myself were put in our newly created department called Academic Support but were given the role of Coordinator of Campus Tutoring Services a few months later.” While in that role, Cofer also was able to serve as an advisor for general studies and helped bring Safe Zone training to ABAC, with Urquhart as co-facilitator. Cofer was a huge part of students’ success at ABAC in the AAC. She said this success came from “bringing a sense of community to the tutoring center” and “our tutor training certification through the College Reading and Learning Association.” Cofer ended with, “I so miss the agriculture basis of ABAC… I don’t see as many cowboy hats, boots or trucks up here and I must admit, I miss that.”
As for the big shoes she leaves behind, Cofer said, “I completely believe in the new Coordinator of the AAC, Josh Clements. Josh was one of my tutors years ago and I know he shares the same level of passion about the AAC as I did.”
Joshua Clements was a former Tutor Support Professional. Jana Register has filled in Clement’s former role. Both see the AAC entering a new era. Last year, the AAC had roughly 35 tutors, but both remarked that around 20 new tutors were hired because many of them graduated.
Register graduated from ABAC just last year and said, “I am excited and less nervous than I thought I would be starting this position and my career. ABAC is my home and I couldn’t imagine a better place to continue my professional growth.”
The AAC is located on the third floor of Branch Hall. Fall hours are 8 a.m.-12 a.m. with tutoring offered from 9 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday-Thursday; 8 a.m.-3 p.m. with tutoring offered from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on Fridays; 5 p.m.-12 a.m. with no tutoring offered on Sundays.
