The Acoustic and Arts Show will bring live music, arts and Lebanese food to Tifton, April 12.
For around a decade, local photographer Daniel Shippey has organized this event as a way to showcase original art in Tifton. For past shows, Shippey opened up his studio doors to the public for the event, but this year the event will take place at Collins.
Collins is an event space that opened in May 2016. The property was originally a family-owned grocery store and one of the first African-American owned businesses in Tifton when it opened in the ‘40s according to the current owner M. Jay Hall. It’s named after James Collins who established the grocery store.
“Mr. Collins recognized that members of the surrounding community were hard-working and sometimes struggled to make ends meet. This led to the creation of both credit accounts and delivery services for his customers,” stated in a post on Collins’ Instagram.
At the space, there are two patios, an indoor/outdoor bar which will be serving drinks and an indoor stage where four artists will be playing acoustic that night. Some of the returning artists include: “Stages and Stereos”, a pop-punk band out of Tallahassee; “Derrick Dove”, a southern blues rocker from Tifton; and Kade W., a local singer/songwriter.
The new band is, “The Brown Goose” from Tallahassee. Shippey described the band as having an “eclectic sound” and “elements of soul, alt-rock and punk.”
Some of the visual arts that will be sold at the event include burnt wood designs, paintings, photography, jewelry and more.
Katie Dickens, an artist who has sold her work at previous Arts and Acoustic Shows, is trying to become a full-time artist and says that she relies on events like these to get her foot in the door commissioning her art.
“It’s always really nice to have something local and get inspired by other local artists,” Dickens said, “Sometimes it can be hard to find creative minds down here, so the event really brings artists and like-minded people together.”
Doors open at 6 p.m. and the show begins at 7 p.m. The address for Collins is 2703 US 41 S., Tifton, GA. There will be a cover fee of seven dollars.
