ABAC Housing is having an open mic/karaoke night in the Lakeside lobby. I will be hosting the event under my mobile karaoke business, Sunshine Event Services.
All types of campus connections can happen if this event becomes reoccurring. Students all have individual lives and interests that can expose someone to something new on campus, like a club or a study group.
Karaoke builds community by bringing together all sorts of demographics. No matter who comes up to the mic, everyone is applauded. The main purpose is to have fun in a judgement-free zone.
The idea of open mic/karaoke night becoming a regular event on campus will not be achievable if the turnout is not adequate for Housing to consider this possibility.
I started this business back in 2022 and got my business license in 2023. I was overworked and underpaid at the venue I had begun hosting at. I eventually saved up enough money for my own equipment and now host at multiple venues in the area weekly.
I started this business because I like letting people sing and have a good time while supporting small businesses or venues. I enjoy seeing people forget their problems in the world, even if it is for a few hours, and just have fun with one another.
Having karaoke as a reoccurring event benefits the patrons and the venues. I have patrons that come every week to my venues who look forward to seeing each other.
One of my venues is Don Julio’s Mexican Restaurant in downtown Tifton, where I host every Wednesday from 6-9 p.m. The owner, Antonio Viveros, said, “It attracts more customers. Before we had karaoke, it was slow, now that we have it every week, it pushes sales up by 50 percent.”
The type of environment that I create in these public venues could benefit ABAC student life. Students would have a consistent and friendly environment to hangout and meet different people on campus.
Come and grab a mic and make a new connection on campus on Aug. 17 from 8-10 p.m.
