Street vendors can be found anywhere in Mexico, from flea markets to sidewalks.

However, they are more common in cities with bigger Latino communities. Popular among street vendors are antojitos, which translates to “little craving.”

The list of antojitos is endless. With so many options to choose from, trying to decide can quickly become a hassle. These snacks can range from sweet to salty to spicy; this is what makes them so unique.

A popular antojito in the Hispanic community is chamoy. Chamoy is often referred to as a condiment or syrup. It also varies in consistency, sometimes as a liquid or as a thicker paste.

Chamoy complements just about anything. It’s very similar to tajin and is often paired with it on a “vaso de fruta”; this is also an antojito.

The vaso de fruta is a fruit cup containing fruits such as watermelon, cantaloupe, papaya, pineapple, mango, cucumber, and water chestnut. The most important thing to note about this antojito is that it can be customized to your liking.

Another important antojito in the Hispanic community is the esquite/elote, otherwise known as Mexican street corn, a snack that dates back centuries. The indigenous peoples of Mexico often prepared this snack over a fire.

The Aztecs and Mayans would roast the sweet corn, and once it was ready, they topped it off with lime and chili powder. Over time, they found themselves adding mayonnaise on it and finally sprinkling it off with queso fresco. All of these flavors and textures combined work together as a culinary art form and truly show the many flavors Mexico has to offer.

You’re probably hungry and craving these delicious snacks by now. Luckily, you don’t have to go too far to find these delicious snacks.
